Guarnaschelli was the daughter of Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli. Barnard College awarded her a master's degree in art history in 1991. In one time, she was paid minimum wages at the American Place in 1991. Guarnaschelli started her journey into the culinary world through watching her mom prepare and editing books. Guarnaschelli's career began in the kitchen of Larry Forgione. Her son Marc Forgione was the Iron Chef. Guarnaschelli later went on to work at various restaurants throughout France and Los Angeles. Guy Savoy manages La Butte Chaillot. Before joining Butter, she worked as an executive chef at the Patina restaurant owned by Daniel Boulud and at Joachim Splichal's Patina. Before it closed, she served as the executive chef of The Darby. She is chair of the Food Museum's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli launched her first cookbook in 2013. "Old Home Comfort Food: How I Learned To cook" includes memoirs and favourite recipes developed by Guarnaschelli during her career as a professional.
